Entry has been made again? This question is because… Siddiqui’s murder is the first case of murder of a high-profile leader in Mumbai in the last three decades, which has shocked the entire state.

Underworld entered in the 70s

During the nineties, Mumbai’s image was as a city of dreams, but this image of Mumbai was tarnished by the underworld. There was such a reign of terror that even people living miles away were afraid of going to Mumbai and this chapter of terror had started in the seventies itself. At that time, there was a person whose name made even big mafias tremble. He never picked up a gun. Never fired any shots. Never committed murder, but became Mumbai’s biggest don. The name of that person was Sultan Mirza.. alias Haji Mastan.

Don became a puncture dealer

Haji Mastan’s father came to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1934. Haji Mastan’s father opened a puncture shop in Crawford Market. Haji Mastan also started sitting at the shop with his father. During this period, the port of Bombay was flourishing. A lot of goods were coming and going from abroad. Mastan got the job of a porter at the port. He was called a coolie, but his real business was smuggling. Started smuggling watches, walkman, radio and other things from the port. Then gradually he moved from the world of smuggling to the world of prostitution. By 1970, the whole of Bombay had come to know Haji Mastan.

Dawood Ibrahim became don after Haji Mastan

Emergency was imposed in the country in 1975. Many dons like Mastan were put in jail. After being released from jail, Haji Mastan entered politics. Formed a party named Dalit-Muslim Suraksha Mahasangh. In 1990, its name was changed to ‘Indian Minorities Federation’. The party contested civic elections in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras, but was not successful. There came a time when Haji Mastan started becoming popular in Bollywood… film stars used to dance to his tune. Haji Mastan died of a heart attack in 1994. After the death of Haji Mastan, his disciple Dawood Ibrahim started ruling the Mumbai underworld.

In 1993 the world saw the dreadful face of the underworld

Although the black log of Dawood Ibrahim’s crimes had started since the 70s, Mumbai had seen the most dreadful face of terror of Dawood and his henchmen in 1993. On March 12, 1993, at 1:30 pm, the 29-storey building of the Bombay Stock Exchange was shaken by an explosion. Before people could recover, 45 minutes later Mumbai was rocked by another blast. After this, a series of blasts started. Mumbai was shaken by 12 blasts in two hours. These blasts took place at important and crowded places like Shiv Sena Bhawan, Air India Building, Plaza Cinema, Airport in Mumbai. 257 people were killed and 713 were injured in these serial blasts. Then, for the first time, RDX was used during a terrorist incident in the country. Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim had a hand in these attacks. The blast was planned by Tiger Memon. Both have not been caught till date. Before the 1993 Mumbai blasts, Dawood Ibrahim used to stay in Dubai and keep an eye on the black business in Mumbai. Dawood had made inroads in the film world also. Dawood currently lives in Karachi, Pakistan and runs his gang from there.

Bollywood became more scared after the murder of Gulshan Kumar

The date was 12 August 1997 and the day was Tuesday. Cassette King Gulshan Kumar, 42, came out of his house carrying a puja thali. At around 10:10, Gulshan Kumar, wearing a white kurta and white sandals, got down from his maroon colored Maruti Esteem car and went to worship in the Shiva temple. At 10.40, Gulshan Kumar was coming towards his car after performing puja from the temple. As soon as they take a few steps, the miscreants sitting in ambush attack them. Dawood’s henchmen fire a total of 16 bullets at Gulshan Kumar. The police arrived after the information and took Gulshan Kumar away, but by then the doctor declared him dead. This incident once again exposed the fear of the underworld in Mumbai. Due to it being a very high profile case, the investigation gained momentum. On the basis of eyewitnesses, a profile was prepared for the attackers. Within two days, the Crime Branch arrested 6 people.. All of them were associated with the Abu Salem group.. During interrogation, all of them had accepted about the meeting in Dubai. Actually, Gulshan Kumar was receiving threats for a long time. A ransom of Rs 10 crore was being demanded from the underworld.

After the death of Gulshan Kumar, the police had eliminated the underworld from Mumbai.

After the murder of Gulshan Kumar, Mumbai Police decided to break the back of the underworld. A law like MCOCA was made to eliminate criminals. The coordination of central investigating agencies IB, RAW, CBI with the local police increased. Encounters started, which completely destroyed the underworld, but the murder of Baba Siddiqui has once again made the knock of the underworld felt.
